Case study

Helping vulnerable client secure a larger share of late mother’s Estate

The Client

Six months before she died, Anna’s mother altered her will to favour her grandson (Anna’s son). Anna was expecting to receive a 50% share of the Estate. She’s in her 50s, and her husband is unemployed. Anna has Bipolar Disorder, and can work only intermittently. There’s no certainty she will be able to continue working in the future.

The Challenge

Anna’s lawyer filed an Inheritance Act 1975 claim and instructed us to create an accurate Schedule of Outgoings to enable her to project Anna’s future needs, taking into account her committed spending and personal expenditure, including holidays. Although Anna had prepared some figures, her lawyer was keen to engage an independent and impartial third party to prepare a proper schedule to ensure its accuracy and provide impartiality.

The Solution

We prepared a detailed breakdown of Anna’s regular expenses and financial commitments to support her claim for a larger share of her mother’s Estate. It provided an accurate picture of Anna’s financial situation and helped to demonstrate her needs and obligations.

The Outcome

Anna’s case was settled at mediation. Her lawyer confirmed that our report definitely helped them achieve a good outcome for Anna.
